Public Toilets by Aleksandra Wasilkowska

Shadow Architecture. Part II and III. Bazaars and Toilets

The first part was dedicated to the street trade, functioning on the verge
of legality, but playing a very important social and economic role. The second part
is a continuation of the topic of vendors’ culture. It presents bazaars, a space also
connected with trade and micro-entrepreneurship, but more structured and legal.
Third part touches on the other aspect of the marginalised Shadow Architecture,
i.e. the toilets. The stalls, the bazaars, as well as public toilets are the most egalitarian
space, independent from the social status, accessible for everyone. What connects
them is the negative stereotype of filthy and chaotic place and their eviction from the
urban maps.

Stalls between Walls by Alex Schweder

Architects design buildings to order the world, embody morality, and reflect societal fantasies. Once built, designed spaces are occupied and inform the way that occupants of those environments think of themselves; the spaces we subjectively create then create us as

The economy shapes both architecture and the ethics of its creators. A city focused only on profits may turn into nothing more than an Excel graph. However, the architects who design buildings without taking into account their future maintenance costs
