BMW ART CLUB: DREAM OF THE MACHINE BY NOVIKI
In partnership with the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków, BMW presents DREAM OF THE MACHINE – an interdisciplinary art project developed by the NOVIKI studio as part of the fifth edition of the BMW Art Club. The Future is Art.
Journeying into the DREAM OF THE MACHINE
In THE DREAM OF THE MACHINE, artists explore affiliations between human consciousness and Artificial Intelligence. NOVIKI’s realisation is a multidimensional journey taken simultaneously in cinematic narrative, virtual reality, and Cracow’s urban space.
The DREAM OF THE MACHINE comprises two mutually complementary components. One: a film essay designed in multimedia-format, an immersive exhibition organised in the MOS exhibition space of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow. Two: a garden and sound experience, referencing the film essay and shown in the Garden of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow – revitalised and arranged to a bespoke design by NOVIKI with support from BMW.
Algorithms hallucinating, AI dreaming, and human fantasies
The AI hallucinations phenomenon has been identified as a point of departure for the film essay. “AI hallucinations” is a phrase used to describe incorrect or misleading results generated by advanced IT systems, ostensibly unbased on data originally used to train the systems. While AI hallucinations are stereotypically perceived in system error categories, NOVIKI have proposed a different point of view, wherein the phenomenon is seen as akin to creative play of the imagination, experienced in particular when sleeping. The film invites the audience to enter the reality of a dream dreamed jointly with Artificial Intelligence algorithms while tapping Artificial Intelligence’s creative potential.
Technology in harmony with nature
Combined with the transformation of the Garden at Plac Świętego Ducha (Holy Spirit Square ), the sound experience carries film narrative motifs over into real space, one that NOVIKI have afforded the form of a green oasis in the city centre. It is a model garden of the future from the DREAM OF THE MACHINE – a dream of new reality wherein rather than standing in opposition to nature, technology comes closer to its fundamental character, forming a harmonious unity therewith.
BMW has revitalised the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre Garden.
As part of the fifth edition of BMW Art Club. The Future is Art, the Garden of the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow has undergone comprehensive revitalisation. The revitalisation concept was developed by the NOVIKI studio, the underlying plan and design authored by landscape architects from Cracow: Kuba Kulesza and Anna Gałecka-Drozda. Inaccessible to local residents over recent years, garden space has been restored to the city as a place of leisure, relaxation and getting in touch with nature.
